Gaining a little weight, feeling tired, having bruises that don’t go away are not symptoms of prediabetes in themselves, but when they occur together they could be.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that prediabetes occurs when blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to qualify as diabetes.
However, most are unaware they have it and are silently paving the way for a much more serious illness. This is according to the North American endocrinologist Ashita Gupta, who points out that up to 9 out of 10 patients do not know that they suffer from pre-diabetes.
“Indeed, it is common for these people to feel perfectly normal and healthy, while prediabetes progresses,” he explains to health and wellness magazine Shape.
1. Blurred vision
Gupta says sudden rises and falls in blood sugar levels – common in people with pre-diabetes – can damage the eye’s ability to focus, leading to blurred vision. This symptom should disappear once the sugar level is regulated.
2. Excessive thirst
Excessive thirst is one of the most characteristic signs of prediabetes and diabetes. This happens in response to excess blood sugar, as the body tries to eliminate the excess through urine, causing you to go to the bathroom more than usual.
This, in turn, can cause dehydration, which makes you thirsty.
