Instructions
1. Make the Patties:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
- Mix the ingredients gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix to ensure the patties remain tender.
- Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and form them into patties.
2. Cook the Patties:
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add the patties to the hot skillet and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, or until the patties are browned and cooked through (internal temperature should be 160°F/71°C).
- Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
3. Prepare the Gravy:
- In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions and sauté until they are soft and golden brown, about 5-6 minutes.
- Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes to eliminate the raw taste of the flour.
- Gradually add the beef broth, whisking constantly to prevent lumps from forming.
- Stir in Worcestershire sauce and ketchup, then simmer for 5-7 minutes, or until the gravy thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
4. Simmer the Patties in the Gravy:
- Return the cooked patties to the skillet and let them simmer in the gravy for an additional 5 minutes, allowing the patties to soak up the delicious flavors of the gravy.
5. Serve:
- Serve the hamburger steak patties hot, topped with the rich onion gravy.
- Pair with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite vegetables for a complete meal.
Tips for Success:
- Don’t overmix the meat: When forming the patties, mix the ingredients gently to keep them tender.
- Gravy thickness: If the gravy becomes too thick, add a little more beef broth or water to loosen it up.
- Adjust seasoning: Taste the gravy as it simmers and adjust the salt and pepper to your liking.
